Research Associate – Elephant Welfare, Nottingham

They are seeking a post-doctoral scientist for a part-time (2-3 days a week) position for 12 months (commencing July 2019) to support activities relating to the Elephant Welfare Group (EWG), a UK government advisory committee whose role is to support and advise UK zoos on assessing and improving UK zoo elephant welfare.
The EWG has four welfare assessment tools which they they developed for this purpose (gait scoring, locomotion scoring, body condition scoring, and a behavioural welfare assessment tool), which are being routinely used by elephant keepers on a quarterly basis, and results are submitted to the EWG. They are seeking an experienced welfare scientist to help them to gather, collate and analyse the data from these tools, in preparation for the EWG’s ten-year report to government in 2020, and in support of a REF Impact case being developed by the PI for this project.

This Research Associate post is a 12 month part-time role within the Elephant Welfare Group under the direction of Dr Lisa Yon (project PI) who is based at the University of Nottingham, School of Veterinary Medicine and Science.
The post holder will continue:
To engage with key stakeholders to improve uptake and ensure correct use of the tools.
To gather, collate and analyse data on improvements to zoo elephant welfare as a result of this work, and provide detailed information for the 10 year report to government on this activity.

Additionally, the post holder will collaborate with the rest of the team to:
Present data at EWG and keepers’ meetings
Develop a website and online resources to improve adoption of the tool in the UK and internationally.

Candidates should have a PhD in animal behaviour and/or welfare with strong statistical analysis, ideally will also have knowledge of multilevel analysis, and excellent communication skills. Ideally the candidate must be living in Nottingham or surrounding areas, however, job arrangements can be made. Please specify this on your cover letter.
