Senior Research Associate

This is an exciting opportunity for an experienced data scientist to be part of a large initiative expected to have an important impact on racehorse welfare. This project will develop an integrated Thoroughbred Welfare Database utilising data feeds from a range of stakeholders. The University of Bristol project team will work with British Horseracing Authority (BHA) staff to build on the existing BHA database covering registered racehorses in training, racing and race outcomes. The aim of the database is to improve traceability of racehorses before, during, and after training, benchmark standards of thoroughbred welfare, and to inform proposed welfare initiatives within the industry going forwards.

You will work alongside internationally renowned researchers within the Animal Welfare and Behaviour group, including Dr Siobhan Mullan (Project Lead, welfare scientist) and Prof Andrew Dowsey (Head of Research, data scientist). You will be intricately involved in creating and implementing analytical studies on data sources with statistical rigour. You will have a significant background in statistical analysis and general data mining techniques, including machine learning. Equally, you will be able to understand various data structures and common methods of data transformation, harmonisation and quality control.

Informal enquiries can be made to Dr Siobhan Mullan; Siobhan.mullan@bristol.ac.uk; 0117 928 9484
