Defra – 5 Animal Health and Welfare Senior Policy Advisors

There are 5 roles available in the team.

• 1x Animal Health and Welfare Grants Team. This team is developing a grant scheme to support investment by livestock farmers to deliver animal health and welfare enhancements not currently delivered sufficiently by the market or through existing regulatory standards. The role will focus on policy development of the new animal health and welfare large grants scheme.

• 2x Animal Health & Welfare Regulation and Enforcement Team. This team ensures that animal health and welfare is represented in the wider future farming and regulation and enforcement changes that will happen now we have left the EU. These roles will focus on providing coordination between policy teams across Animal Health and Welfare and delivery bodies to ensure proportionate and robust enforcement.

• 1x Animal Welfare on Farm Team. This team is delivering a programme of farm animal welfare reform to strengthen the existing standards set down in legislation. The role will focus on policy development and stakeholder engagement, including public consultations on improving aspects of farm animal welfare.

• 1x Animal Health Schemes Team. This team is developing a range of interventions to help improve the health of livestock in England. This is being done through the co-design, with representatives of the farming industry, of the Animal Health and Welfare Pathway (AHWP). The role will focus on policy development and stakeholder engagement for the AHWP.

Whilst the specific responsibilities vary between the roles, they often include:

• Developing policy in an area with considerable Ministerial, Parliamentary and public interest.
• Working closely with teams from across the Defra group and in other government departments to ensure a consistent and joined up approach.
• Building strong relationships with different livestock industry sectors and welfare NGOs.
• Supporting consultation processes and analysis of consultation responses.
• Supporting the drafting of legal instructions.
• Engaging with the core Future Farming programme management teams to ensure deadlines are met and work is delivered on time and to quality.
• Supporting communications both within Government and with key stakeholders and the media.
• Supporting the development of delivery plans for the policy once HMTs approval for the programme’s business case has been received.
• Line managing other staff.

Salary: £35,895 - £43,847
