Canine Behaviour Officer

We are seeking a Behaviour Officer who will support the Canine Behaviour team in developing, reviewing and occasionally presenting dog training and behaviour materials and ensuring that key messages and activities, relating to animal welfare and behaviour, across the charity are evidence-based.

Dogs Trust is the largest dog welfare charity in the UK with a nationwide network of rehoming centres and charity shops. Last year, Dogs Trust centres cared for over 9,000 dogs; we never put a healthy dog down.

Behaviour problems are the most common reason for dogs to come into rehoming centres, and Dogs Trust are committed to making sure that problems are identified and appropriate rehabilitation programmes put in place. Dogs Trust uses reward-based, welfare compatible methods of training and behavioural rehabilitation techniques in line with the latest scientific evidence. Science led behaviour knowledge also informs a range of other areas of Dogs Trust activity, including veterinary, public affairs, and the intervention development and delivery teams.

The successful individual will have a thorough working knowledge of dog behaviour, training and welfare, have the ability to critically evaluate new information, and will be expected to maintain an up to date knowledge of developments in dog behaviour and welfare. They will have excellent communication skills, the ability to liaise with stakeholders sensitively and professionally, and will be passionate about enhancing the welfare of dogs.

This post will be based in the Dogs Trust London Office (initially there will be flexibility around location of work including working from home, however the successful candidate should be able to commute to our London office in the long term).

At Dogs Trust we value diversity and we're committed to creating an inclusive culture. We actively encourage applications from people of all backgrounds, abilities and cultures and believe that a diverse workforce will help us to achieve our mission. Should you need any adjustments to the recruitment process, either at application or interview stage, please contact us on jobs@dogstrust.org.uk.
