Lecturer / Senior Lecturer / Ass Professor / Professor in Animal Welfare, Ethics and Sustainable Agriculture

Bristol Veterinary School (BVS) is seeking to recruit a dynamic animal welfare researcher to develop, build and lead research in the area of animal welfare, ethics and sustainable agriculture. The increasing global demand for food makes it imperative to understand whether and how enhanced animal productivity can proceed sustainably with minimal impact on livestock welfare and the environment, and in an ethically acceptable way. To this end, the successful applicant will be expected to develop a funded research programme in a relevant area which may include, but is not limited to: developing metrics of animal stress-coping, resilience and welfare (incl. automation and 24/7 monitoring); integrating these with production, economic and environmental data; exploring links between individual behaviour, welfare, stress, productivity and environmental impact (e.g. methane production); applying ethical frameworks to understand trade-offs between production, welfare and environmental outcomes; contributing welfare and ethics inputs to economic and environmental modelling of farming systems. The post is advertised from Lecturer to Professor level. The post is based at Bristol Veterinary School on the University of Bristol’s Langford campus, within the Faculty of Health Sciences.
