Research Assistant in Animal Behaviour

The Branco and Margrie labs at the Sainsbury Wellcome Centre are looking for a Research Assistant to help design, set up and deliver world class behavioural data obtained from a range of species at ZSL London Zoo.

You will work closely within a team of neuroscientists at SWC as well as the project lead and zoo staff at ZSL. You will be responsible for designing and setting up monitoring devices for a variety of species and enclosures. This will include designing and building automated behavioural equipment used for behavioural analysis within the enclosures. You will also be responsible for the maintenance and repair of both behavioural and acquisition systems. In addition, you will take part in helping to gather, collate and analyse the data with the project lead and overall team.

The post is funded for four years in the first instance.

You should have prior experience of working within a research environment with animals in captive conditions. Technical expertise in the calibration, maintenance and repair of animal behavioural setups is highly desired, as are excellent communication skills and the ability to use your initiative. Furthermore, though training will be provided, you will be expected to operate prewritten acquisition and data analysis software in MATLAB and/or Python.

You’ll need to have excellent interpersonal skills to work in a multidisciplinary research environment and communicate regularly with lab members, colleagues across SWC and work in especially close collaboration with ZSL staff.
