PhD in Animal Welfare and Behaviour

Project title: Cabin fever in layer hens: welfare consequences of environmental restrictions in free-range layer hens
Supervisors: Dr Jessica Martin, Prof Simone Meddle and Prof Lucy Asher

This project will investigate the welfare consequences of environmental restrictions in free-range layer hens using state of the art combinations of behavioural and neurophysiological techniques to ascertain affective states. The project will be supervised by an ideal multidisciplinary supervisory team with complementary skills in avian behaviour, physiology and computer science. The project will provide extensive training in various methods of welfare assessment and specialist software for machine learning in behavioural welfare assessment.
