Computational Approaches and AI in Animal Welfare Science

Date: 03/04/2024

The Fry Building (School of Mathematics), University of Bristol, UK

This workshop will be relatively small and specialized with a maximum of 50 attendees, and speakers by invitation only. The aim will be to bring together researchers and stakeholders interested in the use of computational methods to further understanding in the fields of animal behaviour, animal emotion and animal welfare science. Not everyone will be a computational expert, however – our planned audience is anyone who has an interest in, or wants to find out more about, computational approaches and the growth of AI in relation to animal welfare, behaviour, emotion and sentience research. Our hope is that the workshop will showcase current developments and successes, with a view to providing an impetus for the growth of computational methods for addressing animal-related issues. We also aim to bring potential collaborators and funders to meet together to discuss developments and new avenues of research. Our focus will be two-fold: ‘data driven’ approaches and ‘theory driven’ approaches to the understanding and use of automation & computation in animal welfare and related research.

Confirmed Speakers:

Lucy Asher (University of Newcastle) “The use of computing and statistical techniques in the study of behaviour and welfare”

Rick D’eath (SRUC) “On-farm livestock monitoring using machine vision & other sensors”

Laszlo Talas (University of Bristol) “Computation, animal sensing and biometrics”

Jarl Giske (University of Bergen) “The use of computational modelling for studies of animal emotion, sentience & welfare”

Vikki Neville (University of Bristol) “Using computational modelling to dissect judgement bias results”
