AWRN-funded Workshop on Interdisciplinary working, artificial intelligence and animal welfare science
Date: 17/09/2025
Online

This workshop on “Interdisciplinary working, artificial intelligence and animal welfare science: cultivating solutions to guide collaborative research endeavours” is being organised by Alison Bard (University of Bristol), the event will be held online.
Overview
The aim of this half-day (12.30-16.30), online workshop is for participants to receive insight from experts in the field on: ‘What matters most when navigating the integration of AI within animal welfare science and animal management practices?’ and to discuss, through a series of small group activities, the following questions: (i) what challenges are there to interdisciplinary working in this context?; (ii) how can these be overcome?; (iii) what stakeholders need to be involved for success?. The expert panel discussion will be held in plenary, whilst small group activities will be held in break-out rooms.

12.30-12.40 Introduction/ welcome
12.40-14.10 Part 1: Expert panel
Invited speakers will each give a ten-minute presentation on ‘What matters most when navigating the integration of AI within animal welfare science and animal management practices?’. Speakers will be selected from six key stakeholder groups, to include the following:
RESEARCH
• Animal Welfare Scientist
• Data scientist
• Social scientist
APPLIED
• Farm stakeholder
• Laboratory stakeholder
• Companion stakeholder
14.10-14.40 BREAK
14.40- 16.30 Part 2: Network participatory discussions
Participants will be split into small working groups of 4-5 to discuss the barriers and facilitators to interdisciplinary collaboration, before feedback in plenary and open discussion.Participants will be allocated non-randomly by research/role context to encourage interdisciplinary discussion.
(A) 14.40- 15.30 Barriers to collaboration What have been your personal experiences of challenges to interdisciplinary working in this context?
(B) 15.30-16.20 Facilitating collaboration How can the challenges highlighted be overcome? What stakeholders need to be involved for success?
16.20-16.30 END Summary/ thank you.
This workshop will be reported for research purposes
During this workshop we will make notes throughout on the ideas shared by participants, to allow us to report on the workshop for research purposes. We will not be recording aspects of the workshop involving participants (i.e. no audio or film will be taken) and all information shared will be reported anonymously. Participant information detailing the purpose of this research study, your involvement as a workshop participant and the use of your data is on the link below.
