Lab Exchange 2024

Animal Welfare Research Network logo

The AWRN Lab Exchange has launched for 2024. It will fund you to complete a placement at a different institution than the one you are currently affiliated with. This may be a university or a non-academic institution. The aim is to give our early career members an opportunity to gain new skills, experience and contacts.

Summary Information

We will fund a minimum of two Lab Exchanges this year, with up to £1,500 per placement. Lab Exchange placements should have a clear and achievable aim/s (e.g., learning a new lab technique or starting a new collaboration).

We’re primarily looking to fund expenses that will facilitate the placement (e.g., travel, accommodation, cover for caring responsibilities), rather than research costs. Placements don’t need to be in a different town or city to your current institution, and they don’t need to be continuous – they can be done in shorter timeframes (e.g., one day a week over an extended period). The host institution may be outside of the UK, but there should still be a benefit to UK animal welfare. Placements will need to be completed before September 2025.

Eligibility

To apply, you must be in your early career (EC). You may be classed as an EC member if you do not yet have a permanent role, or are less than 2 years full-time (or equivalent duration of part-time work, excluding career breaks) into your first permanent position (eg lecturer). The applicant must be an AWRN member. International EC members can apply, however the host institution must be within the UK.

Further Information

More information on the scheme and application process can be found in the guidelines here: LINK TO GUIDELINES. Make sure you read these before starting your application. On 24th June 2024 we held a Monthly Meet-up where you could learn more about the scheme and ask any questions you might have had. A recording of this is now available on the AWRN website, for anyone who was not able to attend. You will need to log in to the website and then click on the link: LINK TO MMU'S
